CHAPTER 31

A LARGE statue of the Buddha sat at the front of a spacious room held up by tall red pillars. Colorful murals decorated the ceilings and walls, and carpets with complex patterns covered the entire floor. Incense permeated the air as someone continuously struck a metallic bowl while the other fifty or so monks chanted incomprehensible mantras in solemn unison. Cangji seemed content staring at nothing in particular while he leaned against one of the columns near a furnace.

Frankly, if Delong didn’t need to give the monastery some face and respect in return for their hospitality, he would never have walked ten steps near the entrance of the shrine room. Although he was half-human and he could perform exorcisms, those Buddhist mantras simply gave him chills in a disturbing way.

Daoist magic was more violent by comparison, but spells usually didn’t work verbally, despite needing oral recitation to be activated. Daoist magic forcibly exorcised beings on contact, disregarding the will of the entity being exorcised. Buddhist magic, on the other hand, usually took form as a nagging voice in the back of one’s head that went on nonstop. It did not kill, per se, but it sure as hell gave Delong migraines. He had no doubt countless ghosts and yao had decided to move on and reincarnate because they could no longer stand the seemingly endless lectures.

Nonetheless, although Delong didn’t know about the monks back in the empire, he remembered Odgerel had told him that esoteric monks practicing Lamaism did not believe in the existence of yao. He had no idea why those prayers ended up acting as an exorcism would anyway, as though yao were unclean spirits who needed to be purified. In the first place, Delong hadn’t chosen any demonic path during his training, so he didn’t understand why these mantras still affected him. Admittedly most yao with lesser training and self-control harmed humans, but these chants were indiscriminate!

At any rate, Delong was just thankful none of the monks here seemed to have any magical talent, so his discomfort was at a minimum. Hell knew what kind of headaches he would get if even one of the monks had magical training.

He didn’t plan to sit here all day, but he had to wait at least until they rested so he could greet Sonam and the other seemingly respected monks here. He sighed and stared at the copper Buddha. Delong had spent most of his youth studying Daoism, so he didn’t know much about Buddhism, much less the Lamaism practiced in the Mongol Khanate and this region.

Although the Central Plain was littered with many monasteries as well, they did not have as much influence as the Daoist sects, especially as the current emperor was a devout believer in Daoism and rejected Buddhism. Moreover, not many Buddhist sects specialized in the study of magic, and those that did usually did not interact with the Daoist sects that liked to hold cross-sect competitions every few years. However, to Delong’s knowledge, the
